A Model of Human Literacy Skill

This wiki presents a model of human literacy skill. We view literacy as a complex web of interwoven, interrelated skills, and so we present our model as involving multiple dimensions:

In this analysis, we outline 15 general classes of literacy activities, representing three modes of thought and five levels of representation. We use these 15 classes to help analyze what kinds of skills are called upon in any type of literacy activity. These families of cognitive strategies are most important for describing how people learn literacy skills because they represent conscious strategies that, once learned, can become routine, creating more sophisticated skills in each of the 15 classes.
