Introduction

What follows is not, strictly speaking, part of the CBALTM competency model for English language arts. It is, rather, a presentation of the standards contained in the Common Core State Standards adopted as part of the Race to the Top reform effort, with crosslinks back to the competency model. The Common Core State Standards include separate standards for language skills, foundational reading skills, reading comprehension, speaking and listening skills, and writing, plus specialized standards for reading and writing in subject areas for the upper grades (i.e., history/social studies and science/technical subjects). We are currently developing additional mappings for the specialized standards for upper-grade reading and writing in subject areas (history/social studies and science/technical subjects) as well as speaking and listening skills, which will be included in future iterations of the model.
